Rescue workers in Poland say hopes are fading of finding up to 15 miners alive who have been trapped underground since yesterday.
Eight of their colleagues were killed in a gas blast at a mine in the town of Ruda Slaska, some 300km southwest of Warsaw, in the country's main coal producing region.
More than 50 emergency workers dug through 500m of rubble overnight to try to save the miners who are in a shaft about 1km underground.
Efforts are being hindered by rising gas levels and flooding.
Poland's Prime Minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who is at the scene, has promised extra help for the families of the miners.
