John Fitzgerald, from Galbally, Limerick, is the former Dublin City manager.

He will work with existing agencies to identify actions which can be implemented in the area and will report back regularly to the Cabinet Committee on Social Inclusion.

On RTÉ Radio's This Week, the Minister for Defence and Limerick TD, Willie O'Dea, said money would be made available to address the short and medium term needs of the area, once they are identified by the task force under Mr Fitzgerald's leadership.

He estimated that it would cost between €3m and €4m to address the short-term needs.
