Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - Criticises European support for Israel

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has warned Europe it was stirring up hatred in the Middle East by supporting Israel and said it 'may get hurt' if anger in the region boils over.

He also accused the UN Security Council of lacking legitimacy as it continues to work on a draft resolution to impose sanctions over Iran's failure to suspend uranium enrichment.

Britain's ambassador to the UN, Emyr Jones Parry, has said European nations hoped to circulate a draft text on sanctions against Iran to the full council early next week.

Iran is accused by the West of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists it wants nuclear power only to generate electricity.

Its chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, has threatened retaliation if the UN imposes sanctions, possibly by suspending international atomic inspections.

Mr Ahmadinejad, who says the UNSC serves US and British political purposes, made his latest comments to worshippers at Friday prayers in speech broadcast on state radio.
