At least 14 people have been killed and 72 wounded in a series of bomb blasts in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.

One car bomb attack outside a teachers school for young women left two dead and 25 injured. It is understood a suicide bomber detonated the car as the students were leaving the school.

Attacks on female professionals are becoming increasingly common in Iraq, with ultraconservative Islamists seeking to target working women.

Another suicide attack killed five members of an Iraqi police security detail set up to protect goverment offices, while a third ripped through a crowded street market.

Kirkuk's police chief, Major General Torhan Yussef, has confirmed that a total of seven explosions took place.

The blitz came just a week after Iraqi troops carried out a major security operation in the divided oil city, imposing a curfew and launching house searches in an apparently unsuccessful a bid to root out militants.
