The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Demot Ahern, has said Fianna Fáil believed there was no better option as government than the present coalition under the leadership of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
Speaking on RTÉ's The Week in Politics, Mr Ahern said he understood yesterday's meeting between the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste Michael McDowell had gone 'quite well'.
He said he believed the current difficulties would be sorted out and Mr McDowell was right when he talked about keeping a sense of proportion.
On the same programme, the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said the Government had lost its authority to govern and there should be an election now.
Asked whether he was calling for the Taoiseach's resignation over recent disclosures, he said it was his view that they made him unfit to lead a Government.
Earlier, Mr Ahern said he believes progress can be made this week during talks on the Northern Ireland peace process in Scotland.
Speaking in Fermoy in Co Cork, Mr Ahern said it was not a question of signing anything but of making progress.
Mr Ahern said there are a number of issues to resolve and that there was an air of action by everyone to do their best.
He said he would be meeting some of the Northern Ireland parties tomorrow morning and he hoped everyone would have a clear understanding of their position as a result of that meeting.
The Taoiseach also said he hoped to restore the stability of the Government following the disagreement between him and the Tánaiste.
Mr Ahern said he would be speaking with Mr McDowell at tomorrow's talks.
