A force of 170 gardaí were on duty at the Corrib gas terminal in north Mayo this morning as construction workers went back on the site for the second day.

Gardaí closed approach roads to the plant and shortly before 8am a convoy of cars - taking the workers to the facility - passed through crowd control barriers.

The workers were heckled and jeered by members of the Shell to Sea campaign who are opposed to the project.

Gardaí erected the barriers over 1km from the entrance gate. They said they had done so to ensure that the construction workers were able to get onto the site while at the same time allowing the protest to take place.

Yesterday, for the first time in more than a year, construction workers entered the site of the €200m terminal being built by Shell Ireland.
