The Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has said that 11,000 claims for the repayment of nursing home charges have been verified since the scheme to repay charges wrongly levied began recently.
The minister told the Dáil Health Committee that 11,000 claims have been dealt with, of which 8,000 relate to those living and 3,000 relate to the estates of those deceased.
The average repayment to date is between €20,000 and €25,000. Those who do not accept the repayment figure can appeal.
