The trial of the only person charged with murder in connection with the Omagh bombing is underway in Belfast.

Sean Hoey, 37, from Jonesborough in Co Armagh, is charged with the murder of 29 people including a woman pregnant with twins.

He has denied a total of 58 charges, relating not only to the Omagh bombing in August 1998, but to six other murder conspiracies, five bombings, four bomb conspiracies, and the possession of explosives including timer power units, mainly in 1998.

The prosecution has told Belfast Crown Court that those people involved in placing the bomb meant to kill.

In its opening submission, the prosecution said DNA evidence would form part of the case against the accused.

A lawyer said the court would be told about the forensic evidence on the construction of the devices and about the warnings and claims of responsibility involving a recognised dissident republican code word for the car bombs.

The lawyer claimed that both DNA evidence and fibre evidence allegedly connecting the defendant to the series of attacks would show his involvement in them.

Mr Hoey, who has been in custody for three years, sat flanked by two PSNI officers, behind a glass screen, in the centre of the courtroom.

The proceedings are being broadcast via video link to Omagh for the victims' families. However some relatives were in the public gallery in court this morning. The trial continues.
