The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has formally requested that the Energy Regulator rescind the recent 20% hike in electricity prices.

In a letter to the Chairman of the Commission for Energy Regulation, the ICTU has asked Tom Reeves to consider replacing the increase with a 'fuel variation charge'.

ICTU General Secretary David Begg said many people would find it difficult to understand why there was no apparent allowance for the possibility of falling fuel prices.

In recent weeks, oil prices have fallen from a high of $73 per barrel to the current price of $62 per barrel.
