Ryanair has welcomed the easing of hand luggage restrictions on flights, announced today by the British government.

However, it again criticised the continuing body search requirements, which it says are ineffective, unnecessary and unsustainable.

From tomorrow, passengers will still only be allowed one piece of luggage but the maximum size permitted will increase to that of a small roller suitcase. Most liquids will still not be allowed.

Laptops and large electrical items will be allowed on board as hand luggage but will have to be taken out of their bags for separate screening as has been the practice since last month's terrorist alert.

Musicians with instruments too big to go in hand luggage will now be able to carry them on board but they will have to be screened separately.

The British government had been under intense pressure from airlines to ease the restrictions because of loss of revenue.

However today's announcement does not amount to a return to the conditions which prevailed before last summer's alert.
