An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a man in Limerick last night.

The 21-year-old victim has been named as Frankie Ryan from the Delmerge Park area of Moyross.

It is understood he had been involved in a feud between rival gangs, that has claimed six lives over the past six years.

The shooting happened at 10.45pm last night in the Pineview Gardens estate in Moyross.

It is believed that Mr Ryan and another man were sitting in a parked car in the estate when a motorcycle pulled up and opened fire.

Mr Ryan was shot and died at the scene, the second man ran from the car.

Gardaí are now looking at CCTV footage of the area.

A post mortem examination has been carried out on Mr Ryan's body at the Mid Western regional hospital.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, said he was confident that gardaí in Limerick would apprehend whoever was responsible for the killing. 

Local councillor John Gilligan has said people in the Moyross area are fearful of further violent incidents. There was also a call for an increased garda presence in the area to prevent reprisal attacks.
