The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, has dismissed any idea of an early General Election following Mary Harney's resignation as leader of the PDs.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Michael Martin said he did not think the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern would be forced to go to the country sooner than he had planned.
Potential candidates for the PD leadership have until Monday to declare their interest.
Minister for Justice Michael McDowell, Minister for State Tom Parlon and Liz O'Donnell are the three likely contenders, should the leadership contest go to an election.
