The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has told its members to process applications for the Garda Reserve in spite of the fact that it said it would not cooperate with the part-time police force.
Interviews for the reserve force start on Monday, and new recruits are expected to be in training by the end of the month.
The AGSI has denied that the move contravenes its policy of non-cooperation and insists it is fully consistent with it.
This evening, the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, welcomed the association's move over the applications as a very positive development and pointed out that over 6,000 people have so far applied to join the reserve.
