The security operation at the Mansion House in Dublin has been completed.
Gardaí have declared the building safe and the Defence Forces bomb disposal unit has now left the scene, having examined a fire extinguisher on the premises and found that it was safe.
A spokesperson said nothing of a suspicious nature was found.
The Defence Forces began a search of the premises this afternoon after claims that a bomb planted there by loyalist paramilitaries in 1981 could still be on the premises.
The building was evacuated, but the adjoining streets remained open.
Lord Mayor Councillor Vincent Jackson was evacuated from the Mansion House, where he resides, as were all other staff.
