Figures from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre indicate a continuing demand for its services.

The centre provides services to people all over the country through its 24-hour telephone service.

The helpline dealt with over 16,000 calls last year, 14% of them from men.

Calls to the service increased by more than 2,000 last year, the highest ever figure recorded by the centre which has been operating for 25 years.

Most of the calls to the centre come from Dublin, however, calls from outside Dublin more than doubled to 24%.

Almost half of the calls to the service related to child sexual abuse, according to Chief Executive Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop.

With sexual assaults continuing to increase, the Rape Crisis Centre says more Sexual Assault Treatment Units need to be set up.
