Mobile use to cost drivers up to €2,000

The Government has announced that penalty points will be extended to motorists who hold mobile phones while driving.

The Government has announced that penalty points will be extended to motorists who hold mobile phones while driving.

The scheme will take effect from Friday, 1 September.

A motorist using a mobile will have the option to pay a fixed charge of €60 within 28 days or €90 if paid within the next 28-day period.

They will also incur two penalty points.

A motorist convicted in court of a mobile phone offence will have four penalty points endorsed and be liable to a fine of up to €2,000.
