Gardaí have confirmed that the standoff with a man refusing to leave his home in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, has ended.

The man has been released from the local garda station and is currently under medical supervision.

A section of the town centre remains sealed off and garda technical experts are to examine the house this evening.

Gardaí evacuated a section of the town yesterday after the man refused to leave the house on Rosemary Street. At least a dozen people slept in alternative accommodation last night.

The man's solicitor released a statement earlier today explaining the reasons behind his client's actions.

The man has said he was sexually abused while training as a Christian Brother. He has instigated civil proceedings and is seeking compensation.

It is understood the proceedings have been ongoing for a number of years and he has become increasingly frustrated by the delays in achieving justice.

In his statement, the man said he had taken the action in order to bring attention to his situation.

The man, who is in his 50s, is a native of Limerick. He has been living in Roscrea town for a number of years.
