Iran has delivered its response to proposals aimed at ending a nuclear stand-off having already signalled it will defy the international community and refuse to freeze its nuclear programme.
Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, delivered Tehran's written response this afternoon to representatives of the five permanent UNSC members plus Germany.
Details of Iran's response are not immediately available.
The proposal was submitted in June and offers trade and technology incentives in return for a freeze on uranium enrichment.
Yesterday, Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said his country would continue its nuclear energy programme, which he said was not designed to produce weapons.
He also spoke of what he called arrogant powers, led by the United States, which were fearful of progress by Islamic countries.
Divisions are emerging among world powers over how to handle the crisis, with the US calling for sanctions while China maintains that punishing Iran is not the way to resolve the long-running crisis.
Former UN Chief Weapons Inspector Dr Hans Blix said the international community should take a softer approach to Iran.
