Israeli forces say they have seized the Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister, Nasser al-Shaer, in a raid on his home in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

An Israeli army spokesman said the detention was part of the fight against the radical Hamas movement.

Mr Shaer is the latest Hamas member to be seized by Israel since the capture of an Israeli soldier in June.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, a Palestinian gunman has shot dead an Israeli soldier near a Jewish settlement.

Emergency services said the soldier was killed in a drive-by shooting close to the city of Nablus.

The gunman was then shot dead by troops.
