The 31-year-old man arrested for pointing an imitation firearm at Steve Staunton has apologised to the Republic of Ireland manager.

Gardaí conveyed the apology to Mr Staunton this afternoon and the man was released into the custody of his parents.

It is understood the man, from the Portmarnock area, approached Mr Staunton as the Republic of Ireland team returned to the team hotel in Portmarnock, at 7.30pm yesterday evening after training.

The man was carrying a plastic imitation Uzi sub-machine gun and allegedly threatened to kill the 37-year-old manager.

A file on the case will now be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The FAI was anxious to play down the incident last night, stressing that Mr Staunton was uninjured and that he was anxious to move on to the challenge of Ireland's match against Holland at Lansdowne Road tomorrow.
