watch listen

A 15-year-old youth is recovering in hospital after being shot in Limerick city last night.

He was shot in the leg in the O'Malley Park area at around 10pm.

He was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Gardaí believe he was not the intended victim of the shooting.

They believe that a man who was driving a car nearby, which was carrying a woman and an eight-year-old boy as passengers, was the intended target.

The area has been sealed off and a technical examination is being carried out.

A car which gardaí believe may have carried the gunman was later found burned out in the Annacotty area on the city's eastside.

This is also being technically examined along with the car which gardaí believe was carrying the intended victim.

There were two further incidents on the city's northside in the early hours of this morning in which shots were fired at a house in the Moyross area, and in the nearby Kileely area in which an upstairs window of a house was damaged.

Gardaí are trying to establish if there is any connection between the incidents and believe it may be connected to a cross-city feud between a number of rival factions.

It has also emerged that the army bomb disposal team were called in to examine and destroy a device which looked like a grenade, which was found in a garden at the back of the Moyross estate in the early hours of this morning.
