Preliminary examinations on the bodies of the two people found in Catral in Spain indicate that they were shot dead.
The remains have now been removed to Alicante where post mortems are being carried out.
Gardaí who are in Spain believe they are the missing Dublin criminals Stephen Sugg and Shane Coates
A 35-year-old Irishman arrested this morning at his home near Catral is still being questioned by Spanish police.
The bodies were discovered buried in a 6ft grave covered by concrete in an industrial estate on the Costa Blanca yesterday.
It will be some time before their identities can be confirmed.
Mr Sugg and Mr Coates were members of the notorious Westies gang and disappeared over two years ago.
Gardaí believe the men, who went missing in Spain, were murdered by an Irish drug dealing gang based on the Costa Blanca.
As leaders of the Westies criminal gang they intimidated other drug dealers in west and north Dublin, but an attempt to do the same in Spain appears to have cost them their lives.
Gardaí have been liaising with the Spanish authorities for some time in their search for the missing men.
Two Blanchardstown detectives received confidential information over a year ago about the case and travelled to Spain twice to identify the precise location where the bodies were buried.
They have also been liaising with and keeping the families informed.
