The Fianna Fáil parliamentary party has backed efforts to persuade Donegal independent TD Niall Blaney's organisation to rejoin the party.

Contacts are continuing between Mr Blaney and Fianna Fáil, which could see him joining the ranks of party TDs.

Last weekend, the organisation, Independent Fianna Fáil, was reported to have decided to amalgamate with Fianna Fáil.

IFF was established more than 30 years ago, after Mr Blaney's uncle, the late Neil T Blaney, was dismissed from the Cabinet and expelled from the party following the arms trial.

Last week one sitting Fianna Fáil TD in Donegal North East, Dr Jim McDaid, complained that there had been no consultation with the local organisation about the moves.

Local activists fear it could see Letterkenny without a TD after next year's election.
