The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, officially opened a new 4km stretch of road at Mitchelstown in Co Cork this afternoon.
The single carriageway road cost just over €27 million and was completed three months ahead of schedule.
With its completion, construction of a major bypass of the north Co Cork town is now earmarked to begin in 2008.
Further improvements in travelling times between Dublin and Cork are also expected later this year, with the opening of the tolled Fermoy bypass in October.
