The Health Service Executive is to appoint a permanent breast surgeon to Letterkenny General Hospital.
The announcement was made this morning by the four Fianna Fáil TDs in Co Donegal.
The absence of a permanent surgeon has been the subject of local protests.
The appointment is one of the main demands of the Donegal Action for Cancer Care, which brought thousands of people onto the streets of Letterkenny recently demanding better cancer services for the people of Donegal, many of whom have to travel to Dublin for treatment.
Since 1 June no new breast cancer patients have been treated at Letterkenny General Hospital.
The action was taken by the medical board of the hospital in protest at the failure to appoint a permanent surgeon and improve services for breast cancer patients.
DACC says the appointment appears to be a positive step but the group wants to study the full details of the proposal before commenting further.
The group had been considering running candidates in the next General Election.
A DACC delegation recently met the Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney, and put its full list of demands to her, including a satellite radiotherapy unit for the hospital.
It is not clear yet if this or any of DACC's other demands have been met by the Tánaiste.
