The Taoiseach has told the Dáil that he believes future tax reductions should be aimed at the lower end of the scale.

Bertie Ahern said that the burden had now shifted away from those on an average industrial wage (€32,000) and the Government should continue to put resources into that area.

Mr Ahern was replying to a question from Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte.

The Taoiseach also said the Government would not consider a Fine Gael bill that would allow householders to use violence to defend their homes.

Mr Ahern said the bill, which was introduced during Private Members' time last night, goes too far.

He said the law already allowed a proportionate use of force in cases of self-defence.
