Suspected Tamil Tiger attack on bus

Sri Lankan government jets bombed Tamil Tiger positions in the island's northeast this morning.

The attacks followed a suspected Tiger attack on a civilian bus that officials said killed 64 civilians and wounded more than 80, the worst attack on civilians since a ceasefire in 2002.

Authorities say the tamil Tiger rebels detonated two mines placed side by side, spraying the packed bus with ball bearings on an isolated road near rebel-held territory.

It is not yet known if there are any casualties from the raids on rebel-held areas of northeastern Mulattivvu and Trincomalee districts.

Some 500 people have been killed since early April as talks between the government and the rebels collapsed.
