Gardaí in Limerick are searching for two men responsible for an attempted armed robbery on a security van at a shopping centre on the outskirts of the city this morning.

A man armed with a handgun approached a Securicor staff member who was delivering cash to the Allied Irish Bank in Raheen and grabbed a cash container.

The armed raider is understood to be 6' in height and was wearing dark brown pants, a cream beige jacket and a green knitted hat.

A shot was fired during a struggle with the staff member in the incident, which happened shortly after 9am.

The man attempted to escape by hijacking a number of cars but was later picked up by a motorcyclist that drove off in the direction of Mungret.

The motorcycle, a high-powered Honda with false Dublin numberplates, with distinctive navy red and yellow colours and a South African flag sticker attached, was found a short time later.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Roxboro Garda Station on 061-214340.
