SDLP Councillor Pat McCarthy has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Belfast.
Councillor McCarthy, from the Markets area of the city, was first elected to council in 2001 and represents the Laganbank ward.
He replaces the DUP's Wallace Browne who is due to take his seat in the House of Lords later this month.
Mr McCarthy received 37 votes from his own party, the DUP, Ulster Unionists, PUP, Independent Unionist and Alliance. It is the first time an SDLP candidate has received the backing of the DUP.
DUP councillor Ruth Patterson was elected as Deputy Lord Mayor.
Earlier this week the Alliance Party said it would not back the Ulster Unionists for any top council posts because of its arrangement with the PUP, which has links with the UVF.
The new Lord Mayor said that in the city's centenary year he would be appealing to all elected representatives and all shades of opinion in Belfast to help overcome divisions.
He said the city faced many challenges if it is to live up to its past and secure quality of life for its people in the future.
