At least 30 people have been killed and up to 100 are missing in the worst flooding to hit northern Thailand in 60 years.

At least 30 people have been killed and up to 100 are missing in the worst flooding to hit northern Thailand in 60 years.

Mudslides have blocked roads to the mountainous Lab Lae district, where many of the victims are believed to have been swept away by floodwaters.

Police and military forces have sent heavy equipment to help clear the roads, with up to 40cm of water still covering streets in parts of the affected areas.

The nearby provinces of Nan, Phrae, Lampang and Sukhothai have also been hit by floods after unusually early monsoon rains drenched northern Thailand over the weekend.

Some 1,200 people have been evacuated and are staying in schools, temples and municipal halls and more than 103,000 have suffered damage to property.

Train services on lines running north from the capital Bangkok to the city of Chiang Mai have been suspended for a second day following the rescue of 1,000 stranded passengers yesterday.

Officials have blamed the devastation on illegal logging in the region, where clear-cutting has left many hillsides barren.
