A Christian Brother has described as indefensible the fact that a teacher at St Joseph's Industrial School, who was responsible for several serious physical assaults on boys, was allowed to continue to teach at the institution for years.
Brother Seamus Nolan was speaking on day three of the current module of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse.
The brother in question, 'Brother M', fractured a child's jaw shortly before joining St Joseph's in Tralee and also beat a person with a stick and assaulted a boy, giving him a black eye.
'Brother M' continued teaching at St Joseph's from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s.
He eventually retired to Oatlands College in Dublin.
