The US president, George W Bush, is due to make a television address early next week as part of a new push for a broad overhaul of American immigration laws.

The development comes after weeks of nationwide protest rallies.

Mr Bush favours a guest-worker programme that would let immigrants work temporarily in the United States.

However, as part of what he calls a comprehensive approach to immigration, he is also pressing for measures to tighten border security.
