The Circuit Court Judge Brian Curtin has appealed for privacy ahead of the Oireachtas Committee investigation into his behaviour.

In a statement to RTÉ News issued on Judge Curtin's behalf, his solicitor Robert Pierse described recent media coverage surrounding the judge as grossly unfair and hugely dstressing to the judge and his family.

It is the first public comment from the judge since he was charged with possessing child pornography at Tralee District Court in January 2003.

He had since refused to speak publicly either on the charges or on the controversial collapse of his trial in 2004. The trial collapsed because the warrant used to search his home was out of date and there have been subsequent attempts to remove him from office.

Today's statement said Judge Curtin has been co-operating with the Oireachtas Committee and said it was improper to attempt to interfere with the committee's work.

His solicitor also asked the media to respect the rights of Judge Curtin and appealed for the investigation to be conducted in private.
