An RTÉ News Documentary on a Dublin doctor's quarter century of development work in East Africa has won the prestigious Radharc Award.

'When You Say 4,000 Goodbyes' featured Dr Mike Meegan's battle against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in Kenya and Tanzania.

Jim Fahy, RTÉ's Western Correspondent, presented the programme.

Accepting the award in Dublin's Burlington Hotel, Mr Fahy, said Dr Meegan was a man whose passion, action and intensity would have appealed to the late Fr Joe Dunn, whose memory the award honours.

Fr Dunn helped to found the independent Radharc team which produced over 400 religious films worldwide for RTÉ between 1961 and 1996.

Produced by Caroline Bleahen and filmed by Michael Lee, the programme has helped Dr Meegan's ICROSS aid agency raise ¤800,000 in Ireland alone since it was screened 12 months ago.
