The Northern Secretary, Peter Hain, has insisted there is no flexibility in the November deadline for the restoration of devolved government in the North.
Speaking after a meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, Mr Hain said his government would not be 'blinking' on the issue.
Mr Ahern said that while both governments were firmly focused on restoring the institutions, if their efforts failed plan B would involve both governments taking decisions over the heads of elected representatives in the North, and that was something no one wanted.
Today's meeting discussed a range bread and butter issues as well plans for coping with an outbreak of avian flu.
