Immigrants in the US are holding a one-day nationwide strike and business boycott to demand legal rights for millions of illegal immigrants.

Early reports suggested many illegal immigrants were obeying a call to stay away from work and school and avoid spending money, in order to prove the value of immigrants to the US economy.

Many businesses have shut down voluntarily to avoid disruption.
The organisers want an amnesty and eventual citizenship for the estimated 11.5m illegal immigrants currently in the US.

Billed as a 'Day Without Immigrants', cities such as Los Angeles were braced for demonstrations which are expected to draw up to 500,000 people.
