Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets across the US in protest against a proposed crackdown on an estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants.

The national day of protest, the biggest in a wave of rallies that some have compared to the 1960s civil rights movement, was provoked by legislation that would criminalise millions of illegal immigrants and fence off sections of the US border with Mexico.

More than 100,000 people packed the National Mall in Washington, at least 75,000 marched through the Arizona city of Phoenix, and tens of thousands packed the streets around City Hall in New York.

Another giant rally took place in Los Angeles and smaller protests were held in more than 100 cities across the country.

On Friday, the US Senate failed to reach agreement on a compromise deal that would allow illegal immigrants to apply for citizenship.
