The World Health Organisation has said a huge shortage of medical staff in the developing world is seriously undermining efforts to combat major diseases.

In a report marking World Health Day, the WHO said poor countries across Asia and Africa are in urgent need of more than two million doctors and nurses to deal with diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS.

Of the 56 countries that lack health workers, 36 are in sub-Saharan Africa.
