The Green Party has criticised Dublin City Council's plans to introduce a phased ban on heavy goods vehicles when the port tunnel opens later this year.

The council's proposals mean many lorries will still be able to use city centre roads, even after the tunnel opens.

The Green Party's Transport spokesman, Eamon Ryan, asked what the point of spending almost €1bn on the tunnel was, if all trucks would not be forced to use it.

Hauliers have also criticised the plans.  They wanted the council to review the tolls on the West Link and East Link bridges.  The toll on the East Link bridge will be reviewed, but not until 2008.

The council says all construction on the Port Tunnel should be finished by July. The tunnel is due to open after a period of testing in late August/early September.
