The Criminal Assets Bureau has frozen almost €900,000 it seized in raids on a number of premises in north Co Louth earlier this month.

The home of the alleged former chief of staff of the IRA, Thomas 'Slab' Murphy, was among the premises raided.

The High Court granted orders freezing the money and appointed the legal officer of the CAB as receiver.

The orders were made against Thomas Murphy, his brothers Francis and Patrick, and ACE Oils, which CAB says is a consortium owned and controlled by the Murphy group.

CAB officers served the High Court documents at the Murphy addresses this morning.

The Criminal Assets Bureau has been investigating Mr Murphy's activities for some time.

Two weeks ago it carried out a series of raids along the border as part of a joint Garda/PSNI operation and searched a number of offices and homes, including Mr Murphy's and those of his brothers.

A fleet of tankers, computers, documents, two shotguns, over 30,000 cigarettes and over the equivalent of €800,000 in sterling bank notes, euro bank notes and cheques were seized. Four laundering facilities attached to a major network of storage tanks, some of which were underground, were also found.

Last Monday the High Court granted orders freezing over €600,000 and £200,000 seized in those raids.

Mr Murphy was not there when the officers called to his home at Ballybinaby, Co Louth, today, but CAB is still actively seeking to interview about him his financial affairs.
