Some of the former patients of Dr Michael Neary have called on the Irish Nursing Board to conduct a probe into the activities of some midwives in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

It is understood that a formal complaint to the bord is to be made in the near future.

The call comes in the wake of the announcement by the Medical Council that they are to investigate the role of many consultants who were involved in the Neary Affair.

It is likely that many of the doctors criticised in the report of Judge Maureen Harding Clark will be the focus of this new inquiry.

Her report also found that many medical personnel in the hospital did nothing to stop Dr Neary from carrying out unnecessary caesarean hysterectomies.

Judge Clark found that the doctor carried out nearly 130 caesarean hysterectomies during his 25-year career at the hospital. Most doctors would expect to complete two or three.

In a statement the council said it had decided to ask its Fitness to Practice Committee to 'review the actions of certain individual medical practitioners'.

It is likely this will include the work of three obstetricians who carried out a review of nine cases carried out by Dr Neary and exonerated his work. A UK consultant examined the same cases and expressed concerns over patient safety.
