Leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas have arrived in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, for talks about forming a new Palestinian government.

The delegation is headed by Khaled Meshaal, who lives in exile in Damascus.

One senior Hamas official said the group was hoping to win significant political and financial backing.

It is the latest visit by Hamas leaders to Arab and Islamic countries to seek support following their victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections in January.

Earlier the Palestinian Prime Minister designate, Ismail Haniya, who is a senior official in Hamas, submitted a document to the President, Mahmmoud Abbas, outlining the proposed policies of the new government.
