A court in Greece has sentenced Dublin man Tommy Savage to five years imprisonment on charges relating to an attempt to smuggle four tonnes of cannabis into Greece in 1997.
Savage, 55, denied involvement in the smuggling attempt and said he intends to appeal the sentence.
He told the court in Athens that he was the victim of a conspiracy by a criminal gang involved in internet fraud to set him up for the cannabis smuggling charges.
He claims the gang defrauded him, causing the collapse of his hotel business in Amsterdam, where he has lived since 1990.
Savage served nine years in Portlaoise Prison for armed robbery, and is a former member of the INLA.
He was extradited to Greece from the Netherlands last summer on foot of a European Arrest warrant. He is challenging its validity in the European Court of Human Rights.
Savage was one of 12 people sought by Greek authorities in connection with the attempted landing at the port of Piraus.
