Dublin developer Chris Jones has admitted that councillors who voted for rezoning his lands were given political donations.

But Mr Jones denied at the Mahon Tribunal that he knew bribes would be paid to councillors in exchange for their vote.

Mr Jones paid over £45,000 to politicians in election expenses around the time his land at Ballycullen was rezoned for housing.

Frank Dunlop claims he paid a further £11,000 in bribes and that Mr Jones knew this because he told him 'the ways of the world would have to apply'.

Mr Jones said today he had never heard that expression in his life.

He said he engaged Mr Dunlop as a lobbyist because he was told that all 76 Dublin County Councillors would have to be spoken to individually if they were to vote in favour of rezoning.

Mr Jones said he had presented very attractive housing schemes to the council but they were all rejected and he could not understand what was going on.

He said Dublin West TD Liam Lawlor told him he did not have a chance of rezoning because he had no reputation as a developer and would have to go into partnership with builder Joe Tiernan.

Mr Jones, who was then President of the Construction Industry Federation, said he paid Mr Lawlor £7,500 for that advice and gave another £10,000 in donations.

Brennan accepted cheques from developer

The Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Séamus Brennan, has told the Mahon Tribunal he accepted £4,700 from Chris Jones for the Fianna Fáil party.

However, Mr Brennan denied that Mr Jones ever lobbied him over the rezoning of lands in Ballycullen, which are in his constituency of Dublin South.

He said he was 'just the postman' for two cheques of £1,500 sent by Mr Jones following a fundraising dinner in 1994.
