International road safety experts have attended the first day of a two-day conference in Dublin on how to improve road safety in Ireland.

The National Roads Authority has invited experts from Australia, Sweden and the US to speak at the event.

They were due to discuss the techniques used in their countries to improve road safety and how an integrated approach can help improve the safety record on the nation's roads.

The last time such a conference took place was in 1998 when the Government launched its strategy, The Road to Safety.

During that conference the Australian road safety experts recommended random breath testing, the State-wide deployment of speed cameras, and a penalty points system.

This week's conference, entitled An Integrated Approach to Road Safety, is likely to cover many of the same issues.

It is thought the updated Rules of the Road book will also be on the agenda.

The new edition comes 11 years after the last and includes the introduction of penalty points, the national car test and the changeover from miles per hour to kilometres per hour.

The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, will address the conference tomorrow.
