Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Fr Denis Brennan as the new Bishop of Ferns.
Fr Brennan, 60, is the first local appointee to the diocese for a generation.
He is Parish Priest of Taghmon in Co Wexford and is the Diocesan delegate for child protection.
Bishop Brendan Comiskey resigned over his handling of clerical child abuse allegations in Easter 2002.
