Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte has confirmed receiving a £2,000 cash donation from lobbyist Frank Dunlop.

Mr Rabbitte told the Mahon Tribunal that the money was used for election expenses in 1992 before being returned by cheque.

Mr Dunlop has claimed the amount was £3,000 and paid following Mr Rabbitte's support for the rezoning of lands at Ballycullen in south Dublin.

He said he could not recall how the money was used in the election but he denied that it was lodged in his personal account or that of his wife.

Mr Rabbitte denies this and says that at the time of the payment he was not aware of rumours of corruption when he was a Dublin county councillor.

Mr Rabbitte said he presumed that the Fianna Fáil party was getting donations from developers because its councillors were being 'marched out like ducks' to support rezonings.

But he said he was not aware of allegations that individual councillors were being paid money in exchange for their votes.

He said he and his then colleagues in Democratic Left voted in favour of the Ballycullen rezoning, but then subsequently voted against it because of rumours that it was 'iffy'.
