The publishers of the two freesheet newspapers in Dublin are to contribute in the region of €120,000 of free advertising for new anti-litter and recycling campaigns in the capital.
RTÉ News has learned that an agreement has been reached between representatives of the two newspapers and city council officials following complaints about the level of waste generated by the freesheets.
The two newspapers, Metro and Herald AM, were launched in the capital last October.
Together, around 120,000 newspapers are given away free every day. But their arrival has led to complaints about littering.
Dublin City Council estimates that they generate between ten and 12 tonnes of waste every day, which is estimated to cost the council up to €12,000 to collect and recycle.
Council officials say the payment from the publishers is not once off - they expect yearly contributions.
It is hoped the new arrangement will encourage other publishers to contribute to the capital's multi-million euro bill for recycling newspapers.
