President Mary McAleese has defended her comments on the cartoons of Mohammed saying her remarks were in line with both Government and European Union policy.

The President had said on Sunday that Ireland 'abhorred' the publication of the cartoons and equally abhorred the violence of the protests which followed.

Mrs McAleese was speaking in Jordan where she visited the site where John the Baptist baptised Jesus.
