U2 picked up five Grammys at the annual music awards in Los Angeles last night.

U2 picked up five Grammys at the annual music awards in Los Angeles last night.

It brings their overall total of Grammys to 22, and brings the band to number six on the all-time list of Grammy winners.

The band won the best album and best rock album awards for 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'.

One of the tracks on the album, 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own', took the song of the year and best rock performance by a group awards, while another, 'City of Blinding Lights', was named best rock song.

Top nominees Mariah Carey, rapper Kanye West and R&B singer John Legend, each won three Grammys.

Green Day was the surprise winner of the record of the year award with 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'.

Alison Krauss with her band, Union Station, won Grammys for country performance by a duo or group with vocals, best country instrumental performance, and best country album.

Paul McCartney was among the multiple nominees who went home with nothing. He received three nominations.

Other losers included rapper 50 Cent, who had six nominations, and five-time nominees Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani.
